Unexpected worsening of chronic diseases

Psychosomatic approach is mostly used in patients with an unclear diagnosis or symptoms that cannot be labelled clearly.

However, it can be very helpful as well in patients with chronic symptoms having a distinct diagnosis. And virtually it may be any kind of disease. Especially, if there is a sudden change in the well-being of the patient.

For example a change in the effect of the treatment. We may imagine a patient having arterial hypertension, which is well compensated with antihypertensive medication. Suddenly, the blood pressure values may rise significantly, without having changed the drugs. In such a case, usually, the patient will be checked by the physician for all kind of conditions, that could have an influence on his blood pressure, like the kidney function or heart issues. If this all is negative, most often the physician will change or increase the dosage of the medication. We believe, that it would be much better to look as well for a possible psycho-social influence, before just increasing the dosage of the medication. We can imagine that he might be in a difficult work situation with the danger of loosing his job. But sometimes the stress source most not be that obvious and can be more hidden. This can include partnership issues or other tensions in the family system, which are usually not addressed in the medical cabinet of the biologically oriented physician. However, if the patient is under stress of any kind, this may have an influence on his blood pressure within a few weeks or months.  In such a case it is definitely more appropriate to deal also with the stress cause itself, than just to turn on the medical spirale.
